Helsinki Institute of Physics - Part of World Scale Virtualization
Virtualization as a term is usually used in the context of a layer between physical servers and operating systems. On the storage side it's used in separating physical and logical storage. The benefits of virtualization are evident and the adoption has been fast. The grid does a similar thing for scientific calculation on a larger scale. The scientists have storage and computing resources, which they use transparently from their own desktop, without any idea about the physical resources behind it all. How is it done in practice? What do we actually use on the provider side? And what do we run it on? Linux.
